Newton Abbott has placed in service a new utility/light rescue vehicle, labeled 7-1, to fill a niche role which until now was handled by Rescue 3.
The 2013 Chevrolet Crew Cab pickup has a custom body by Monroe Custom Utility Bodies, with a Tommy Gate for ease of lifting ungainly loads. A single firefighter can safely handle the task of rapidly deploying generators, or other equipment, in various places at a substantially reduced risk of occupational injury.
Other roles performed by a crew responding with this vehicle include traffic control, CO detector responses, EMS assistance, or other manpower-relative tasks that don’t require larger apparatus. Using the smaller, more agile truck reduces wear and tear on the much more expensive (and aging) heavy rescue, and requires less training to operate.
