Newton Abbott firefighters, with mutual aid companies, fought a dangerous residential fire this evening.
At 8:02 PM, Hamburg Fire Control received a 911 report of smoke emanating from a residence on Milestrip Road. Chief Brian Evaldi arrived on scene three minutes after the initial dispatch, reporting a working structure fire in a 1 1/2 story residence. There was initial concern that the home was occupied, as a vehicle was in the driveway. After conducting a primary search, it was determined that no one was in the residence at the time.
Crews encountered heavy smoke and high heat conditions, and located a hole in the floor of the first floor. The flooring around a wood-burning stove had ignited, burning through, and causing the iron appliance to fall into a crawl space.
The fire was under control at 8:57 pm. Mutual aid assistance was provided by Armor, Blasdell, Big Tree, Orchard Park RIT, Scranton, Woodlawn, and Town of Hamburg Emergency Management/Fire coordinators.
