Among the litany of skills a firefighter must maintain is the ability to effect self-escape from a deadly situation. One such method of escape is what’s commonly referred to as a “bailout,” wherein the firefighter descends from a window using a mechanical aid. This technique would be employed when conditions in a room, having a window, become untenable and there is no alternate route of egress.
Newton Abbott firefighters conducted such training this morning at the Hamburg Village Fire Department’s training facility, and were able to make use of a new belay device. This device ensures the safety of the members should there be an error or equipment defect during training that would otherwise lead to a fall. Safety is always paramount in the fire service.
