Newton Abbott was dispatched to a reported head-on motor vehicle collision this morning at 5:59, in the vicinity of Erie Community College-South Campus. There was an initial report that one of the vehicles was also on fire.

Town of Hamburg police located the accident and reported that there was no fire, but that heavy extrication would be required to free one of the drivers, who was unconscious. Newton Abbott Chiefs Chad Locher and Charles Minich arrived and assessed the scene, quickly calling for an additional rescue from the Armor Fire Company.

Newton Abbott Rescue 3 and Armor Rescue 7 operated multiple hydraulic tools to extricate the unconscious victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. Newton Abbott Engine 1 and Light Rescue 7-1 established a working zone for the prolonged extrication, closing westbound traffic at Abbott Road, and restricting eastbound traffic to a single lane from ECC to the Town of Orchard Park, while Hamburg police conducted an initial accident investigation.

American Medical Response transported the operator of the second vehicle.
